PM warns unacceptable chants at Spain-Egypt match harm country

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez on Wednesday strongly condemned an “uncivil minority” of football fans for chanting anti-Muslim slogans during a friendly match against Egypt in Barcelona, saying the behavior tarnished Spain’s image.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) following Tuesday’s incident, Sánchez declared the chants “unacceptable and must not happen again.”

“We cannot allow an uncivil minority to tarnish the reality of Spain, a diverse and tolerant country,” he wrote.

The remarks come after fans directed offensive anti-Muslim chants at the Egyptian team during the international friendly in Barcelona.
