Russia calls for diplomacy over Iran nuclear standoff, offers mediation

Russia urged all sides to show restraint over Iran’s nuclear programme, emphasizing that the issue should be resolved through political and diplomatic means.

The Kremlin’s statement comes after U.S. President Donald Trump threatened military action against Iran unless it agrees to new terms with Washington. Moscow has offered to mediate between the two nations in an effort to de-escalate tensions.

“We believe the Iranian nuclear issue must be addressed solely through diplomatic means,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters. “All parties should exercise maximum restraint and prioritize diplomatic solutions.”

Russia, which has strengthened ties with Iran since the war in Ukraine, signed a strategic partnership with Tehran in January. However, Moscow is also seeking to rebuild relations with Trump’s administration, a move that has unsettled Ukraine and European nations concerned about potential concessions to Russia.

Trump claims Iran is close to developing a nuclear bomb, while Tehran insists its nuclear programme is strictly for peaceful energy production—a stance Russia has publicly supported.
