Russian paramilitary unit withdraws from Burkina Faso

Ukraine’s cross-border incursion into Russia has disrupted Russian mercenaries’ plans in Burkina Faso.

Many fighters, initially stationed in the West African nation, have been recalled to strengthen Moscow’s defenses, according to a paramilitary commander.

Viktor Yermolaev, leader of the Medvedi (Bears) unit, revealed in an AFP interview that while some of his fighters remained in Burkina Faso, others had left.

This comes as Ukraine’s actions in Russia’s Kursk region escalate the ongoing conflict.

The Bear Brigade is one of several mercenary groups linked to Russia, similar to the now-defunct Wagner Group.

Yermolaev, also known as Jedi, emphasized the honor of defending Russia, stating that the situation required their return.

Although Yermolaev didn’t disclose specifics, reports suggest around 100 fighters left Burkina Faso.

Western intelligence indicates that these forces were primarily responsible for securing the country’s junta leader, Ibrahim Traore, who sought Russian military support after expelling French forces.

Yermolaev mentioned that despite the withdrawals, some resources and fighters remain in Burkina Faso.

Experts believe that while their presence is limited, Russia will likely maintain its influence through other units in the region.
