Tens killed in tragic boat capsize off Turkish coast

A heartbreaking incident unfolded on Friday in the northern Aegean Sea, where a rubber dinghy carrying migrants capsized, resulting in the deaths of at least 22 people. The tragedy occurred off the coast of Eceabat, Canakkale province, in Turkey.

Details surrounding the incident remain unclear, as the exact number of passengers on board at the time of the sinking is unknown. Turkish Coast Guard personnel were able to rescue two individuals from the water near Eceabat, while two others managed to reach the shore and raise the alarm. Search efforts are ongoing in the area.

Governor Ilhami Aktas confirmed the grim news, adding that seven of the deceased were infants or children. Authorities are still working to determine the nationalities of the migrants. According to reports from the Demiroren News Agency, the group aimed to reach the Greek island of Samothraki.

Turkish authorities deployed a significant search and rescue operation in response to the disaster. Eighteen rescue boats, a plane, two helicopters, and a drone are actively scouring the area. Ambulances are also on standby at a nearby port to assist survivors.

While the flow of migrants has subsided in recent years, the perilous journey across the Aegean Sea remains a reality for many seeking a better life in Europe. Those attempting the crossing, often from the Middle East and Africa, utilize Turkey as a departure point in hopes of reaching Greece or Italy. This week alone, the Turkish Coast Guard apprehended at least 93 migrants attempting such a voyage.
