US President Donald Trump has warned that Britain is “on the brink of disaster,” citing mass immigration, soaring energy costs and the country’s net-zero policies.
In an interview with GB News, Trump said the British government faced serious challenges that needed to be addressed urgently.
“Your country is in trouble. You are on the brink of disaster,” he said. “You have a massive immigration problem and a massive energy problem. Your energy costs are three or four times higher than they should be.”
Relations between Washington and London have fluctuated during Trump’s presidency and have deteriorated since his 2025 state visit, amid disagreements over several domestic and foreign policy issues.
Trump reiterated his admiration for King Charles III and described himself as a supporter of Britain, but said Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s government must overcome significant problems.
The US president, who has repeatedly dismissed climate change concerns, has previously criticised Britain’s shift away from fossil fuels. He has also urged successive British governments to expand oil and gas production in the North Sea.
Trump warned that large-scale immigration was transforming the country.
“If you don’t stop people pouring into your country from all over the world, you won’t have a country left,” he said.
Immigration, particularly the arrival of migrants crossing the English Channel in small boats, remains a major concern for many British voters. The issue has contributed to a sharp rise in support for Nigel Farage’s right-wing Reform UK party.
