US President Donald Trump said early Thursday that Iran was “collapsing” and had lost its position as the dominant power in the Middle East, while claiming the United States was winning its war against Tehran.
Speaking at an event in Dallas, Trump also said Washington was in control of the Strait of Hormuz and suggested the strategically important waterway should be renamed the “Trump Strait.”
“Iran is collapsing. It was the bully of the Middle East for decades, and it is no longer,” Trump said. “We are winning the war against Iran and we control the Strait of Hormuz.”
Trump also used the speech to praise his domestic record, describing the past two years as among the most successful in US history and promising to make the country stronger, safer, wealthier and more free.
Turning to immigration, Trump said his administration had halted what he described as a crisis at the southern border through the construction of a border wall and tougher immigration policies.
He also argued that his previous election victory had “saved” the United States and said his administration would pursue greater energy independence and dominance.
“We will have independence and dominance in the energy sector, and we will achieve superiority in this field,” Trump said.
