Trump threatens Democrats over impeachment after election defeat

Donald Trump speaks to reporters at the White House in Washington, DC, on October 16, 2026

US President Donald Trump warned Democrats on Wednesday that any attempt to impeach him would destroy their party, as he acknowledged that the war with Iran had contributed significantly to Republican losses in the congressional midterm elections.

Speaking to reporters, Trump defended his administration’s military campaign against Iran despite its political consequences, insisting that the decision to confront Tehran was justified.

“We had to do the Iran thing, and we’re still doing it,” Trump said, adding that the operation had been worth the political cost.

The president acknowledged that the conflict had played a major role in the Republican defeat but maintained that preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons remained a priority.

“You cannot allow Iran to have a nuclear weapon,” he said.

Trump also argued that Republicans might have performed better had his name appeared on the ballot, suggesting that the party had struggled to transfer his personal support to congressional candidates.

His remarks followed a sweeping Democratic victory in Tuesday’s midterm elections, which saw Republicans lose control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate.

The result gives Democrats greater power to investigate the Trump administration and challenge its legislative agenda during the final two years of his presidency.

Trump warned that any effort to pursue impeachment proceedings against him would ultimately damage the Democratic Party.

Despite his warning, the president expressed confidence that he could eventually reach agreements with Democratic lawmakers on key issues.

The Republican defeat marks a significant shift in Washington’s political balance, with the Iran war and economic concerns emerging as major issues during the election campaign.
