Turkey to join ICJ genocide case against Israel, source says

Turkey will submit a declaration of intervention in South Africa’s genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague on Wednesday, according to a diplomatic source.

The declaration is scheduled for 1330 GMT, following an announcement by Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan earlier this week that Turkey would take this step.

“Turkey’s intervention aims to urge the international community to recognize and address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza,” the source said.

In May, Turkey decided to join the case initiated by South Africa, intensifying its measures against Israel over the Gaza assault. Turkey stated that its bid would follow necessary legal preparations.

In June, Spain also requested to intervene in the case at the ICJ, the United Nations’ highest legal body established in 1945 to resolve disputes between states.

Israel has consistently rejected the accusations of genocide in the case, asserting that its operations in Gaza are acts of self-defense aimed at Hamas fighters, who attacked Israel on October 7.
