Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan recently engaged in a phone call with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, discussing bilateral relations, regional dynamics, and global affairs.
During the conversation, Erdogan emphasized the strengthening ties between the two nations.
Notably, Turkey has been actively involved in mediating tensions between Ethiopia and Somalia, which escalated after Ethiopia’s deal with the breakaway region of Somaliland.
The agreement, signed on New Year’s Day, allows Ethiopia access to the sea through a port in Somaliland, while details remain somewhat unclear.
In response to Israel’s offensive in Gaza, Erdogan condemned the actions as “genocide” and highlighted Ethiopia’s support for the Palestinian cause.
The ongoing diplomatic efforts aim to address concerns related to Somali unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.
An initial round of talks between the foreign ministers of Ethiopia and Somalia took place in Ankara, with plans for a second round in September.
Turkey’s involvement underscores its commitment to easing tensions in the Horn of Africa and promoting lasting peace.
