UN condemns Israeli attack on Gaza aid center

In a sharp condemnation, United Nations officials expressed dismay over Israel’s bombardment of a UNRWA distribution center in the southern Gaza Strip.

Medical sources reported a death toll of at least five individuals, with several others wounded.

UN Humanitarian Relief Coordinator Martin Griffiths lamented the tragedy, highlighting the immense loss suffered by both Gaza residents and aid workers.

Griffiths questioned the feasibility of sustaining aid operations amidst persistent threats to UN teams and supplies.

He emphasized the imperative to safeguard humanitarian efforts on the ground, unequivocally calling for an end to the ongoing conflict.

UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric underscored the sharing of coordinates for all UN facilities with relevant parties, deeming the attack detrimental to aid delivery and staff safety.

The assault on the distribution center reflects a concerning trend of diminishing respect for humanitarian endeavors, remarked Dujarric.

He mourned the sacrifices made by UN personnel worldwide, emphasizing the urgent need for accountability for such atrocities.

Dujarric condemned statements by Israeli Public Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir defending the killing of a 13-year-old Palestinian, emphasizing that violence against children is unequivocally reprehensible.

Since the cross-border attack by Hamas on October 7, Israel has launched a deadly military offensive on Gaza, resulting in significant civilian casualties and infrastructure damage.

The blockade imposed by Israel has exacerbated the humanitarian crisis, leading to widespread shortages and deprivation.

The dire situation has prompted international scrutiny, with the International Court of Justice accusing Israel of genocide and issuing interim measures to ensure humanitarian assistance to Gaza civilians.
