US attack on Yemen kills 80, marking deadliest strike yet

US airstrikes on a Yemeni fuel port have killed at least 80 people, marking the deadliest attack in the ongoing 15-month campaign against Huthi rebels.

The strikes on Ras Issa on Thursday were aimed at disrupting supplies and funds to the Iran-backed insurgents, who control large parts of Yemen.

The US military confirmed the attack was part of an intensified effort under President Donald Trump to curb the rebels’ activities, including attacks on shipping in the Red Sea.

The Huthis’ Al-Masirah TV reported the death toll had risen to 80, with 150 more injured.

Rescue operations continued Friday night, with authorities fearing the toll could increase.

The US strikes have been a key strategy in weakening the Huthis, whose missile and maritime attacks have escalated since the Gaza war in 2023.

In response, the Huthis launched missile strikes against Israel and US aircraft carriers.

The strikes, which have intensified since March, come as the US prepares to restart nuclear talks with Iran.

“The military actions in Yemen are clearly sending a signal to Tehran,” said consultant Mohammed Albasha.

Protests erupted in Huthi-controlled areas, with demonstrators chanting anti-American slogans.

The US is targeting both the Huthi military and their economic infrastructure, sending a powerful message about the stakes of the ongoing conflict.

Meanwhile, the global shipping industry is grappling with disruptions caused by the rebels’ attacks on critical maritime routes.

The international response continues to evolve, with Iranian and Palestinian leaders condemning the US actions as “barbaric” and “aggressive.”
