A senior U.S. envoy praised Egypt’s latest plan for Gaza on Thursday, calling it a positive move while stopping short of endorsing its specifics.
Steve Witkoff, the Trump administration’s Middle East envoy, acknowledged the proposal as a constructive effort but emphasized the need for further discussions.
“We need more discussion about it, but it’s a good-faith first step from the Egyptians,” Witkoff told reporters.
The remarks came as former President Donald Trump’s approach to the crisis continued to stir debate.
Trump recently issued a stark warning to Gaza residents, stating, “You are DEAD” unless Hamas releases hostages. His forceful rhetoric raised questions about potential military action.
Witkoff hinted that a response could be imminent. “I think there’s going to be some action. It could be jointly with the Israelis,” he said, suggesting a coordinated strategy against Hamas.
He added that Hamas still had an opportunity to negotiate. “It’s unclear right now, but I think Hamas has an opportunity to act reasonably, to do what’s right, and then to walk out. They’re not going to be a part of a government there,” he stated.
Egypt’s plan emerges as an alternative to previous U.S. calls to relocate Palestinians from Gaza, an idea that drew international criticism. While details remain undisclosed, Witkoff’s comments indicate that Washington is open to regional-led initiatives.
The situation remains fluid as diplomatic efforts and military threats continue to shape Gaza’s uncertain future.
