White House officials believe former Speaker Nancy Pelosi supports Representative Adam Schiff’s call for President Joe Biden to step aside.
Pelosi has reportedly told Biden he cannot win the Nov. 5 election, according to a top White House source.
On Wednesday, Schiff expressed “serious concerns” about Biden’s ability to defeat Republican challenger Donald Trump, making him the first Democrat to do so since the Saturday assassination attempt against Trump.
Biden’s campaign had hoped the shooting, which left Trump with a wound to the right ear, would reduce calls for Biden to step aside in the 2024 race.
However, Schiff’s statement reignited those concerns.
The source, speaking anonymously, said Pelosi is “convinced public sentiment is against POTUS” and that Schiff would not act without her approval.
Pelosi believes Biden cannot change the public’s opinion of him.
Pelosi and Schiff, influential Democratic figures from California, have not commented publicly.
Some Democratic lawmakers have also urged Biden to step aside due to concerns about his age and poll numbers as the election approaches.
