WHO condemns Israeli strike on Gaza’s safe zone, calls for truce

The World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has called for an immediate ceasefire following Israeli airstrikes on a designated “safe zone” in southern Gaza.

Tedros condemned the Tuesday attacks on tents housing displaced civilians in Khan Younis, an area meant to protect those fleeing the conflict.

According to Gaza’s civil defense service, the airstrikes killed at least 40 people and injured many more, leaving craters as deep as 30 feet.

Tedros emphasized that peace is essential, noting that medical aid alone cannot save lives in such dire conditions.

Despite the ongoing conflict, a polio vaccination campaign in northern Gaza is expected to continue until September 12.

The WHO is working to deliver fuel and supplies to ensure that medical services, especially child vaccinations, remain operational.

Tedros urged for humanitarian pauses and protection of health workers in the war-torn region.

Since the conflict escalated last October following a Hamas incursion, more than 41,000 Palestinians have been killed, with negotiations to end the war currently stalled.
