Burkina Faso has become the first team to secure a spot in the 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals.
The Burkinabe side joins host nation Morocco in the 24-team tournament after a decisive 2-0 victory against Burundi on Sunday.
The win came through a goal from Mohamed Konate and a penalty by Bertrand Traore.
These crucial goals brought Burkina Faso’s total to 10 points from four matches in Group L, ensuring they cannot finish outside the top two.
Senegal currently occupies second place in Group L with seven points from three matches.
They have an opportunity to qualify if they secure a victory against Malawi in an away match scheduled for Tuesday.
Burundi sits with three points from four games, while Malawi remains without any points after three matches.
The qualification process for AFCON 2025 involves the top two teams from each of the 12 groups moving on to the finals.
The tournament is set to take place from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026. However, in Group B, only one other team will qualify alongside hosts Morocco.
In Group L, alongside Burkina Faso and Senegal, other teams competing are Gabon, the Central African Republic, and Lesotho.
The race for qualification remains intense as teams vie for the remaining spots in the prestigious tournament.
