France’s Mbappe trains in mask, eyes return against Poland

France coach Didier Deschamps provided a positive update on Kylian Mbappe’s recovery from a broken nose but stopped short of confirming the star forward’s availability for their final Euro 2024 Group D match against Poland on Tuesday.

“He’s improving daily,” Deschamps told reporters.

“The bruising is getting better, and he’s adapting to the protective mask.”

Mbappe missed their scoreless draw with the Netherlands last Friday after suffering an injury in their opening win over Austria.

Mbappe, who will wear the mask upon returning, remains eager to play.

“His desire to play is as strong as ever,” Deschamps added. “He feels the mask restricts his vision slightly, but he’s adjusting.”

France, currently in second place, require a better result than the Netherlands’ (who play Austria simultaneously) to secure top spot in the group.

Their quest for a strong finish becomes even more crucial considering their lone goal so far came via their own goal.

“Kylian’s an elite finisher,” said teammate N’Golo Kante.

“Having him back is a huge boost. He looked dangerous and decisive in training today, and we hope it translates to the match.”
