Ghana coach Chris Hughton faced off-field drama just as his team prepares for a pivotal Africa Cup of Nations clash against record champions Egypt. Following a shock opening defeat to Cape Verde, an angry supporter confronted Hughton at the team’s hotel in Abidjan, demanding improvement or resignation.
“It has had a lot of media coverage and I appreciate the messages of support,” Hughton acknowledged, deflecting questions about the incident. “But today is a day to look forward to a very competitive game we have tomorrow.”
The pressure is immense on Ghana, already grappling with an uphill battle to reach the last 16 after the Cape Verde loss. Another defeat against Egypt would send them on the verge of elimination, mirroring their disappointing first-round exit at the 2022 AFCON.
The Black Stars, with four continental titles to their name but none since 1982, arrived in Ivory Coast on the back of a dismal 1-0 World Cup qualifier loss to minnows Comoros. They appeared on course for a point against Cape Verde, thanks to Alexander Djiku’s goal, only to concede a heartbreaking injury-time winner from Garry Rodrigues.
Adding to the anxieties, key playmaker Mohammed Kudus is a doubt for the Egypt clash, having missed the opener with an injury sustained at West Ham. “We will continue to assess him,” said Hughton, hoping to unleash the Premier League star’s attacking prowess.
Appointed last year in the aftermath of Ghana’s World Cup group-stage exit, Hughton dismissed questions about his job security hinging on the Egypt result. “I am here as Black Stars coach, leading the team into what is a very important game, and this is the only focus that I have,” he asserted.
With Mohamed Salah salvaging a draw for Egypt against Mozambique, tomorrow’s encounter promises a fiery battle between two African giants. Hughton’s men must channel their focus from off-field distractions and put on a performance worthy of their illustrious past if they are to overcome the Pharaohs and keep their AFCON dreams alive.
