NBA defense icon falls: Dikembe Mutombo dies

Dikembe Mutombo, NBA Hall of Famer, passed away at age 58 from brain cancer, the NBA announced on Monday.

The Congolese center, known for his towering 7’2″ frame, was an eight-time NBA All-Star and four-time Defensive Player of the Year. He was beloved for his shot-blocking prowess and fan-favorite finger-wag celebration.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver praised Mutombo’s legacy, saying he was a giant both on and off the court. “He poured his heart into helping others,” Silver added.

Mutombo played 18 seasons with six teams, averaging 9.8 points and 10.3 rebounds per game. He reached the NBA Finals twice, with the Philadelphia 76ers and New Jersey Nets.

After retiring in 2009, Mutombo became the NBA’s first global ambassador, promoting the sport in Africa. Silver highlighted his dedication to making a positive impact, especially in his native Democratic Republic of Congo.

Mutombo’s death has led to an outpouring of grief from fans, teams, and fellow players. Magic Johnson expressed his heartbreak, calling Mutombo an incredible man with a “pure heart of gold.”

The Denver Nuggets, who drafted Mutombo in 1991, honored him as one of the most beloved players to ever play the game.
