Nigerian race erupts as Enyimba abandons match over penalty call

A pivotal derby in Nigeria between Enugu Rangers and visiting Enyimba was abandoned Sunday night after the home team were awarded a late penalty and the visitors walked off.

The “Oriental Derby”, between the top two in the Nigerian league, attracted a sold-out crowd to Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in the southeastern town of Enugu.

The match was goalless when Rangers were awarded a stoppage-time penalty.

Enyimba walked off in protest before hundreds of fans invaded the pitch.

The penalty was awarded when an Enyimba defender was judged to have pulled back a home striker as he tried to shoot.

The victory Sunday night would have given Rangers a five-point lead over defending champions Enyimba with two rounds to play.

Enyimba later posted on social media that they were unhappy with the way the game ended saying they came to play, not for a war with the hashtag #FootballWithoutViolence.

Remo Stars, who lost 3-2 at Lobi Stars earlier today are a point behind Enyimba.

The Nigerian league champions and runners-up will represent the country in the CAF Champions League.
