South African football giants Kaizer Chiefs stumble again

Kaizer Chiefs managed to secure a last-minute 1-1 draw with TS Galaxy on Monday in their continued struggle within the South African Premiership.

The Chiefs, once giants of South African football with 53 domestic trophies, have been grappling with poor form, having won just three of their last nine league matches. Despite their history, the club remains far from their former glory, sitting ninth in the standings, nine points behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates.

The match in Mbombela saw TS Galaxy take the lead in the 35th minute, with Samukelo Kabini heading in the opening goal. Despite a fierce effort, Chiefs found themselves trailing until the dying seconds.

With the game entering added time, Chiefs substitute Ranga Chivaviro emerged as the hero. The Ivorian goalkeeper Ira Tape mishandled a corner, and Chivaviro reacted quickly to poke the ball across the line, securing a valuable point for his side.

The match, played under intense 35°C (95°F) heat, was marked by constant interruptions due to injuries, including two to Tape during added time. TS Galaxy, coached by Serbian Adnan Bega novic, climbed two places to 11th, following the departure of German coach Sead Ramovic last month.

Despite the late drama, Chiefs’ disappointing season continues, as they struggle to regain their former dominance under new Tunisian coach Noureddine Nabi.
