4.4 quake hits near Tokar, Sudan

A moderate earthquake off the Red Sea coast has drawn attention to recurring seismic activity in the region and its potential impact on nearby coastal cities.

A 4.4 magnitude earthquake struck in the early hours of Wednesday, December 24, 2025, in the Red Sea area, around 189 kilometres northeast of the city of Tokar in eastern Sudan, according to preliminary data.

Initial reports said the epicentre was approximately 126 kilometres from the western coast of Saudi Arabia, with the tremor felt across parts of eastern Sudan.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage, but the quake comes amid growing concern over seismic movements in the Red Sea basin.
