African Union urges Sudan parties to halt fighting in El Obeid

African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf has expressed deep concern over escalating fighting around El Obeid and the worsening humanitarian situation in Sudan.

In a statement, Youssouf called on all parties to immediately stop hostilities and show maximum restraint to prevent further suffering.

He urged the warring sides to comply with international humanitarian law and uphold their commitments under the Jeddah Declaration, particularly those related to protecting civilians.

Youssouf also called for safe and unhindered humanitarian access to affected communities across the country.

The African Union stressed the need for accountability for violations, abuses, and war crimes committed against civilians during the conflict.

The Chairperson further urged regional and international actors to avoid actions that could fuel the violence.

The African Union reaffirmed its commitment to Sudan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and called for an inclusive political process to restore peace and constitutional order.
