Ahmed Abbas says 75 percent of Burhan’s army are Islamists in Sudan

Ahmed Abbas, former Sennar governor under Omar al-Bashir, claims 75% of Abdel Fattah al-Burhan’s army are Islamist, calling the conflict “the war of the Islamist movement.”

The statement comes amid rising tensions in Port Sudan after Burhan publicly denied the presence of Muslim Brotherhood fighters.

Islamist leaders quickly released videos confirming their active role in battles since April 2023.

Abbas added that the movement openly backs the government, manages foreign relations, and controls key economic sectors despite past corruption charges.

Critics say Burhan downplays the Brotherhood’s influence, even as its leaders dominate military and civilian structures.

Abdul-Hay Yusuf, an Islamist figure, said Burhan is “too weak to eliminate the Islamists,” highlighting their entrenched power.

Observers interpret the feud as a sign of deepening fractures within Sudan’s military-Islamist coalition, complicating the war and raising questions about the country’s political stability.
