Al-Burhan orders arrest of Islamist battalion leader

Sudan’s military-controlled authorities have issued an arrest warrant for Naji Mustafa, a key figure in the Islamic Movement (Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood), according to a statement he posted on Facebook.

Mustafa said the warrant was issued in response to his criticism of a political document presented to SAF chief, Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan.

Mustafa, a longtime Islamist leader, is actively involved in the ongoing war as part of the Islamist battalions aligned with the SAF.

The document in question outlines political and security arrangements for Sudan’s next phase, aiming to shape the country’s future governance. Its submission to Burhan has sparked controversy, particularly among Islamist factions that fear marginalization.

A well-known figure in Sudan’s Islamist movement, Mustafa has been a vocal supporter of the SAF in its fight against the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

Since the outbreak of the conflict in April 2023, jihadist battalions have declared their backing of the army and engaged in combat alongside it.
