The Sudanese Human Rights Observatory has uncovered a new case of violence by General al-Burhan’s army (SAF) personnel against prisoners of war, adding to a growing list of atrocities committed by the SAF and allied Islamists since their entry into the city of Wad Madani.
In a statement, the group reported that a sexual assault against prisoners by members of the SAF and the extremist Barah Bin Malik Battalion occurred in Wad Madani. “Video footage has documented the perpetrators, who are fighters from the Barah Bin Malik militia, one of whom is seen sexually assaulting a prisoner, stripping him of his clothes and binding his arms and legs,” the statement read.
The group noted that the assault took place while members of the extremist battalion and SAF personnel looked on. It also highlighted the increasing number of brutal violations by the Barah Bin Malik Battalion against both civilians and prisoners of war, calling it a deeply concerning and disturbing trend.
Additionally, the observatory mentioned ongoing reports of SAF crimes, including extrajudicial killings, unlawful detentions, and torture. It called for more attention to be placed on the growing number of violations against prisoners of war by both the SAF and its allied militias.
The Sudanese Human Rights Observatory condemned these actions as blatant violations of religious, legal, and human rights norms. It called for an immediate end to the violations against Sudanese citizens and urged the international community to take urgent action to protect civilians, ensure their safety, and put a stop to these horrific crimes.
