An armed group entered the Aftit camp for Sudanese refugees in Ethiopia’s Amhara region on Friday night, exchanging fire with camp guards before withdrawing without injuries, refugees told Radio Dabanga. The incursion, around 9 p.m. on Sept. 19, was the second in a week.
Witnesses said a previous raid on Wednesday targeted a viewing club inside the camp. More than a dozen assailants participated: two entered the venue to loot, a third stood at the door with a blade, and others secured approaches and camp entrances. Phones were seized from a nearby charging shop under threat; no shots were fired during that incident.
Refugees said the episodes have heightened fear over their safety inside Aftit. Authorities had earlier moved refugees from the Kumer and Olala camps to Aftit citing security risks. The latest incident is the third reported attack in under six months.
