At least 40 children killed in Sudan bombings: UNICEF

Sudan’s ongoing conflict has claimed the lives of at least 40 children over the past three days, according to UNICEF.

The children were killed in bombings across multiple regions, highlighting the growing risks children face in the war-torn country.

Annmarie Swai, UNICEF’s representative in Sudan, described the situation as a “stark” example of the violence children are enduring.

She reported that 21 children were killed and 29 others injured in a bombing on the southern city of Kadugli on Monday.

Further tragic news came from El-Fasher in North Darfur, where a bombing at a livestock market left 11 children dead.

On Saturday, an additional eight children were killed in a market strike near Sudan’s capital, Khartoum.

“At least 40 children reportedly killed across just three days in three separate areas of the country,” Swai said, emphasizing the severity of the situation.

The conflict between General Abdel Fattah al Burhan’s army and the Rapid Support Forces has been ongoing since April 2023, escalating in recent months.

Both factions have been accused of targeting civilians and indiscriminately bombing residential areas.

While Swai refrained from assigning blame for the deadly bombings, the toll on children is undeniable.

The UN has recorded over 900 “grave violations” against children, including killings and injuries, between June and December 2024.
