Attack in South Darfur claims lives of two ICRC drivers

Two drivers from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) met a tragic end at the hands of gunmen in South Darfur, Sudan, on Thursday.

Additionally, three other ICRC personnel sustained injuries during the assault.

The ICRC team had been on a mission to Layba, assessing the needs of communities affected by ongoing armed conflicts when the incident occurred.

In response to the tragedy, the ICRC has prioritized providing support to those affected, including the families, relatives, and coworkers of the victims.

Furthermore, the ICRC emphasized the urgent need for safeguarding all civilians, particularly aid workers and medical professionals, who should never become targets of violence.

Working in collaboration with the Sudanese Red Crescent Society (SRCS), the ICRC delivers essential services in the country. These encompass delivering medical supplies to hospitals in conflict zones, facilitating communication among families separated by violence, promoting compliance with international humanitarian law, and enhancing access to clean water.

This incident underscores the perilous conditions faced by humanitarian workers who risk their lives to provide vital assistance in conflict-affected regions.
