
President Joe Biden’s administration will provide Congress with an assessment by January 17 on the UAE’s claims that it is not supplying weapons to Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
This follows pressure from Democrats to halt arms sales to the UAE until the US verifies these assurances.
Senators Chris Van Hollen and Sara Jacobs introduced legislation last month to block the sale of US weapons to the UAE.
Brett McGurk, Biden’s coordinator for the Middle East, stated that the UAE had confirmed it is not transferring arms to the RSF and will not do so in the future.
The administration has pledged to monitor the UAE’s actions and provide a full report by January 17.
The war between General Abdel Fattah al Burhan’s army and the RSF has resulted with widespread famine and displacement.
With nearly 25 million people in need of aid, the US is increasing humanitarian support to Sudan, while the UAE’s involvement in the conflict remains under scrutiny.
