Burhan ally calls for military rule for 10 more years in Sudan

Sheikh Musa Hilal, head of the Revolutionary Awakening Council, has sparked debate after calling for Sudan to suspend its democratic transition and adopt military rule for the next decade.

Hilal, close to General Abdel Fattah al Burhan junta, argued that the country needs a strong military government for ten years to restore stability and address mounting security challenges.

He said extraordinary measures are necessary to protect Sudan’s borders from what he described as foreign efforts aimed at weakening and dividing the country.

According to Hilal, re-establishing state authority and ending the ongoing conflict should take priority over political reforms and democratic processes.

He maintained that discussions about a democratic future should be delayed until Sudan has overcome its current crises and regained stability.

Hilal also stressed the importance of supporting the country’s current leadership, saying this is essential for preserving national sovereignty and preventing further instability.

His remarks place security concerns and state survival above democratic governance during what he described as a critical period for the country.

The comments come as Sudan continues to face complex political and security challenges, making the proposal highly controversial.

Supporters of Hilal’s position argue that a prolonged period of military rule is necessary to prevent state collapse and restore order.

Critics, however, say the proposal risks undermining Sudan’s aspirations for democratic governance and could delay a long-awaited political transition.
