Sudan’s Gezira State authorities have arrested Dr Naji Mustafa, a leading Islamist figure and influential voice within the Popular Resistance.
Sources said the arrest took place shortly after Mustafa delivered sharp criticism during an informational meeting in the state.
He reportedly accused General Abdel Fattah al Burhan and senior commanders of failing to arm or deploy large numbers of mobilised fighters stationed in resistance camps.
He argued that leaving these forces idle reflected a wider failure in managing the military situation as the conflict deepens.
Abdul Majid Abdul Hamid, editor-in-chief of the Sudanese newspaper Masadir, condemned the arrest in a Facebook post that questioned the manner and secrecy surrounding Mustafa’s detention.
He said the transfer of the detained leader from one facility to another without explanation showed a lack of transparency that fuels public suspicion.
He argued that such treatment was undeserving of a prominent public figure who had long been engaged in armed resistance activities.
Abdul Hamid urged authorities to present any accusations to a court instead of relying on repeated detentions aimed at silencing a critic by force.
He described the approach as blatant injustice and called on the judiciary to intervene and ensure the case is handled within a clear legal process.
He stressed that Mustafa has the right to defend himself before an independent court rather than face exceptional measures that bypass due process.
