A US envoy urged Sudan’s warring factions on Tuesday to adopt a code of conduct to reduce widespread abuses.
While the army is considering the proposal, the rival Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has already agreed to it.
This month, the US organized talks in Geneva to address the severe humanitarian crisis caused by the brutal war in Sudan. Although some progress was made on aid access, a ceasefire was not achieved.
The RSF has committed to a code of conduct, promising to avoid violence against women and destruction of crops.
However, Secretary of State Antony Blinken emphasized that these promises must translate into actions on the ground.
US negotiator Tom Perriello stated that the proposal has been shared with the army, which did not attend the Geneva talks.
He expressed hope for a response in the coming days.
The ongoing conflict, which began in April 2023, has led to tens of thousands of deaths, displaced one in five Sudanese, and caused acute hunger for over 25 million people—more than half the population.
