Burhan reshuffles SAF as he fails against RSF

General Abdel Fattah al Burhan, has failed in fighting against the Rapid Support Forces despite more than two years of war. The RSF, once allies in power, remain entrenched across swathes of Sudan, their resilience underscoring Burhan’s inability in power. On Monday, Burhan reshuffled senior military leadership, appointing new commanders, latest attempt to strengthen his grip even as the war continues to fracture the country.

The shake-up followed the retirement of long-serving officers, some of whom had gained prominence during the bloodiest phases of the fighting. General Mohamed Othman al-Hussein retained his post as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, but other key roles saw fresh appointments.

Burhan named a new inspector general and a new air force chief, moves framed as steps to re-energise the weary SAF command. Another decree placed all armed groups fighting alongside the SAF—Darfur rebels, Islamist brigades, civilian recruits, and tribal militias—directly under his control.
