General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan faces growing challenges as Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces’ leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo strengthens international contacts.
Burhan’s junta expressed concern on Sunday over Hemeti’s visit to Uganda.
Since April 2023, Burhan’s army has struggled to contain Dagalo’s RSF, which operate across multiple regions of the country.
Dagalo met President Yoweri Museveni in Entebbe on Friday.
Dagalo said his visit followed Burhan’s army approaching Uganda to explore potential mediation to address the stalemate in fighting.
The trip came a week after Museveni hosted Malik Agar, deputy to Burhan, in ongoing attempts to mediate the crisis.
Addressing supporters, Dagalo called for peace talks to be led by African institutions, emphasising negotiations within the continent.
Previous ceasefire efforts have faltered, including talks mediated by the US, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and the UAE, leaving no agreement.
Dagalo’s Friday meeting marked his second encounter with Museveni since December 2023, signalling the RSF’s growing regional outreach.
