Burhan’s junta detains National Umma Party deputy official

The National Umma Party has condemned the arrest of its deputy head in North Kordofan State, Siddiq Ghandour, by security forces in Bara.

The party said Ghandour was detained on Thursday while travelling to El Obeid, without any explanation from the authorities.

His whereabouts remain unknown, and his family has been denied access or communication since his arrest.

In a statement, the party denounced the move as part of a broader campaign of intimidation against opposition figures and activists.

It described the arrest as “an extension of the systematic targeting practiced by the security services against the party’s leaders and cadres and other political forces.”

The Umma Party called for Ghandour’s immediate release, along with all other detainees held without charge.

It urged authorities to halt what it termed arbitrary arrests and harassment of civilians trapped amid the country’s protracted war.

The statement highlighted Ghandour’s endurance during more than two years of conflict, noting that he remained among his people in Bara, sharing their hardship and offering support despite dire conditions.

“Despite his steadfastness and perseverance in serving his community, he is being rewarded today with arrest and retaliation,” the statement read. It accused remnants of the former regime within the security apparatus of fostering a “mentality of revenge and exclusion.”

The National Umma Party warned that the continuation of such practices poses grave risks to Sudan’s fragile political landscape.

It reaffirmed its commitment to rejecting war and advocating for a just peace and democratic transformation, insisting that repression will not silence its principles or its pursuit of civilian governance.
