General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan-led army (SAF), is rallying shady armed militias to reinforce its fight against the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Militias gathered in North and West Kordofan announced the formation of the so-called “Dignity Alliance Forces – Kordofan Shield” to back the army’s campaign.
The alliance emerged under the leadership of the armed Kababish tribe, presenting itself to occupy positions in the SAF.
Training camps have been established in the Ad-Daba locality and Umm Daraba area, where citizens are being urged to enlist and prepare for battle.
Since civil war erupted in April 2023, Burhan’s SAF has lost power and combat strength against the RSF, and has begun collecting armed militias from locals.
Kordofan, once a marginal front, has now become a pivotal theatre in a war marked by shifting allegiances and militarised local resistance.
Analysts warn that arming tribal militias could inflame long-standing grievances, dragging Sudan further into chaos and undermining prospects for peace.
