Burhan’s younger brother reportedly involved in road accident

Ahmed al-Burhan, younger brother of Sudanese army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and deputy head of the Popular Resistance in South Shendi, was reportedly involved in a road accident in River Nile state on October 11, 2026

Ahmed al-Burhan, the younger brother of Sudanese army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, was reportedly involved in a road accident while travelling between Atbara and Shendi in River Nile state, according to Sudanese media reports published on Sunday.

Local outlet Al-Zaawia, citing Al-Nil Electronic, reported that the incident occurred as Ahmed was travelling towards Shendi, although the precise location and circumstances of the accident remain unclear.

There was no immediate confirmation of whether he sustained injuries, required hospital treatment or was accompanied by other passengers.

The reports provided no details about the vehicle involved or the possible cause of the accident.

Ahmed al-Burhan serves as deputy head of the Popular Resistance in the South Shendi sector, according to the outlets, and has been involved in mobilisation activities supporting the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF).

The Popular Resistance is part of a wider network of army-aligned mobilisation groups involved in recruiting, organising and training civilian volunteers during Sudan’s ongoing conflict.

In May 2024, the South Shendi Popular Resistance leadership announced plans to expand military training programmes for volunteers, including advanced instruction coordinated with the army’s Third Infantry Division.

The wider Popular Resistance leadership has continued to support the SAF’s military campaign. In September 2026, its national mobilisation committee reaffirmed its backing for army operations across Sudan.

The reported accident comes as Abdel Fattah al-Burhan continues to lead Sudan’s military amid the conflict that erupted in April 2023.

No official account establishing the circumstances of the crash or confirming Ahmed al-Burhan’s medical condition was available at the time of publication.
