Chad halts cross-border trade to prevent Sudan war from spreading

Chad has closed its desert border with Sudan, aiming to reassert neutrality amid fighting on the border.

The government insists it remains neutral in Sudan’s three-year conflict, which has killed tens of thousands and displaced over 12 million people.

Nearly one million Sudanese refugees are already in Chad, straining resources and raising concerns over cross-border violence escalation.

Chad’s Communications Minister said the February 23 border closure prevents risks of the conflict spreading into its territory.

He added Chad reserved the right to retaliate against any aggression or violation of the inviolability of its borders.

Some exemptions will allow Sudanese civilians to seek refuge, though cross-border trade and movement remain suspended indefinitely.

The 1,400-kilometre desert frontier is difficult to control, but closure signals Chad’s return to a stance of strict neutrality, diplomats say.
