The number of suspected cholera cases in East Darfur has climbed to 58, with 10 confirmed deaths, according to a report released Monday by the Health Monitoring Committee of the state’s Ministry of Health.
The report noted fatalities in several areas: five in El Daein, four in Abu Jabara, and one in Krio refugee camp. Cholera cases have been reported in the localities of El Daein, Asalaya, Abu Jabara, Adila, and Bahr al-Arab.
Ali Ibrahim Egheibish, Executive Director of the Ministry, said 25 of the suspected cases were among South Sudanese refugees residing in camps, underscoring the vulnerability of displaced populations.
Three of the cases are currently receiving treatment at El Daein Teaching Hospital’s isolation center, which Egheibish said is operating without basic health standards due to severe underfunding and the broader collapse of healthcare infrastructure in the state.
