Cholera outbreak kills 16 and infects 300 in Sudan

Medical sources say a cholera outbreak in North Kordofan’s Al-Mazroub area has killed 16 people and infected about 300 since June 2, amid severe shortages of medicines and intravenous fluids.

The outbreak follows a deadly wave in North and West Kordofan, including the Fuga area of Al-Nuhud locality, where at least 80 people previously died.

A nurse at Al-Mazroub Hospital said 49 new cases were recorded in one day, while about 80 patients remain hospitalised in Fuga, forcing some to receive treatment outside overcrowded wards.

She warned that dwindling medical supplies and limited treatment capacity are hampering efforts to contain the outbreak despite support from health authorities and local communities.
