Cholera cases are rising rapidly in Sudan’s North Kordofan state, with the town of Al-Mazroub emerging as the centre of the outbreak and raising concerns the disease could spread further.
The preparatory committee of the Sudanese Doctors Syndicate said Al-Mazroub Hospital has treated 418 cholera patients since the outbreak began, with 61 people currently receiving care.
The committee said 29 new cases were recorded in a single day, while the death toll has reached 14 in recent days.
Medical experts said the outbreak spread to Al-Mazroub from neighbouring parts of West Kordofan, where cholera infections had already been reported.
Dr. Adiba Ibrahim Al-Sayed said the outbreak is accelerating because of poor sanitation, contaminated water sources and damaged sewage systems, which are helping the disease spread.
Ibrahim Elsayed warned the outbreak could spread to other parts of Sudan unless health authorities and humanitarian organisations act quickly.
The preparatory committee of the Sudanese Doctors Syndicate called on international health organisations to provide urgent assistance, saying immediate intervention is needed to contain the outbreak before it spreads further.
