Cholera strikes Sudanese refugees in Ugandan hospitals

A contingent of 13 Sudanese individuals, who had fled the conflict in Khartoum, are currently under medical care due to a cholera outbreak in the Adjumani district of northern Uganda.

Health official Henry Lulu has confirmed that four of them have tested positive for cholera.

Authorities are now mobilizing efforts to locate and conduct follow-up testing for approximately 82 individuals who had been in contact with the affected group.

Cholera, a waterborne disease, manifests with severe symptoms such as diarrhea, dehydration, lethargy, and irregular heartbeat. Its progression can lead to fatality within a matter of hours after infection.

Uganda has been grappling with a series of cholera outbreaks since July of the previous year. Cholera incidents have also been reported in Sudan starting from September, and other African nations like Zimbabwe, Mozambique, and Zambia are currently contending with the disease as well.
