Heavy fighting broke out on Thursday inside and around the headquarters of the Fifth Infantry Division in El Obeid, as clashes erupted between SAF and joint forces for a second consecutive day, according to media. The confrontations reportedly involved the use of heavy weapons inside the military zone.
Media sources said a SAF officer holding the rank of colonel was killed inside the division’s headquarters during the clashes. The violence reportedly followed a tense general meeting marked by sharp disagreements and remarks with tribal overtones, which quickly escalated into open fighting and intense exchanges of gunfire.
The sources added that the clashes spread to nearby residential neighbourhoods, raising serious concerns among residents about a wider escalation and its potential impact on the city’s humanitarian and security situation. No official statement has been issued so far to clarify what happened or provide details on casualties or damage.
The developments come amid growing tensions across North Kordofan, with warnings that the deteriorating security situation could further endanger civilians and undermine stability in the state.
