Dagalo meets eastern Sudanese leader as RSF pushes for civilian govt

The leader of Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF), Gen. Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo appeared Wednesday alongside Mabrouk Mubarak Salim, the head of the Free Lions Party, in a move that underscores shifting political alliances.

The meeting comes as attention turns to Nairobi, where Sudanese political and armed groups convened Tuesday to sign a political declaration and interim constitution for a civilian government backed by the RSF in territories under its control.

The gathering has drawn a notable presence of political factions, armed movements, and civil forces, including defectors from the pro-democracy coalition Forces for Freedom and Change.

The signing of the political document was postponed after the unexpected participation of Abdelaziz Adam al-Hilu, leader of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North. The delay, pushing the signing to Friday, aims to allow further consultations on the interim constitution, highlighting the significance of the initiative in shaping Sudan’s political future.

The proposed administration, dubbed the “Government of Unity and Peace,” seeks to establish itself as an alternative to the military-controlled government based in Port Sudan under Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan.

The formation of this civilian government is expected within days of the document’s signing, marking a critical development as the RSF expands its political reach amid Sudan’s ongoing turmoil.
