Sources told media that Rapid Support Forces (RSF) commander and head of the Presidential Council of the Tasis (Founding) Government, Lt Gen Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemedti), has ordered the formation of a committee to review the status of detainees held in RSF-run prisons and detention centers, following the deaths of several detainees under what were described as unclear circumstances.
According to the sources, the committee will be chaired by public prosecutor Ahmed Al-Nour Al-Halla and tasked with reviewing the cases of all detainees. Dagalo has directed that anyone not shown by preliminary investigations to have been involved in hostile acts against the RSF be released, along with elderly detainees and those suffering from chronic illnesses.
The move comes after community leaders and influential figures within the Tasis alliance reportedly conveyed to Dagalo concerns over worsening conditions for detainees at Dagries Prison, south of Nyala in South Darfur state, prompting swift action to establish the review committee.
Detainees at Dagries Prison are reported to be living in dire health and nutritional conditions. The facility holds thousands of civilians and military personnel. In recent days, Adam Ali, the former acting director-general of the Ministry of Finance in East Darfur, died in custody. A source close to his family said he died as a result of torture and complications related to diabetes.
The decision marks the first formal step by RSF leadership to address growing criticism over detention conditions and deaths in custody.
