RSF commander Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo appeared in public on Monday for the first time since being sworn in as chairman of Sudan’s new Presidential Council, which leads “Peace and Unity Government.”
Video footage showed Dagalo walking through the streets of Nyala, South Darfur, where the inauguration ceremony took place over the weekend.
On Saturday, Dagalo officially took the oath of office as head of the 15-member council. The council also includes his deputy, Abdelaziz al-Hilu, as well as the governors of Sudan’s eight regions and leaders of armed groups headed by al-Hadi Idris and al-Tahir Hajar.
The swearing-in ceremony also installed Mohamed Hassan al-Ta’aishi as prime minister, along with 16 ministers representing the newly formed Peace and Unity Government. The cabinet emerged from the Sudan Founding Alliance, a coalition of armed movements and political parties launched in Nairobi earlier this year.
The alliance has adopted a new transitional constitution declaring Sudan a secular state and introducing a confederal system based on eight regional states.
Dagalo’s appearance in Nyala marks the beginning of his public role as head of the Presidential Council, tasked with guiding the new government through one of Sudan’s most turbulent periods in decades.
