Health officials in eastern Sudan are racing to contain a growing diphtheria outbreak as they expand vaccination efforts in vulnerable communities.
Sudan’s Federal Chamber for the National Diphtheria Epidemic Response Campaign has urged health teams to identify and track unvaccinated people aged 5 to 20, ensuring those who missed their shots receive them.
The campaign aims to curb the spread of the bacterial disease by achieving full vaccination coverage in affected areas before it ends.
By Wednesday, medical teams had vaccinated more than 1.1 million people across Red Sea, Blue Nile, Kassala, and River Nile states.
Vaccination campaigns in West Kassala, Aroma, and North Kordofan have also reached hundreds of thousands of people, helping close coverage gaps in key regions.
Officials said preparations are complete for the next phase of the campaign, which is set to begin on August 10 in the Northern State localities of Dongola, Ad-Dabba, and Marawi.
