Egypt calls for urgent Sudan truce as fighting intensifies

Egypt has called for an immediate halt to fighting in Sudan, warning that the worsening humanitarian crisis requires an urgent truce before a comprehensive ceasefire.

Speaking at the Human Rights Council in Geneva, Egypt’s permanent representative, Amr Ramadan, said protecting civilians depends on trusted national institutions backed by the Sudanese people.

He urged a Sudanese-led political process, free from external interference, to end the conflict.

His remarks came as fighting intensified in Al-Abyad, North Kordofan, where General Abdel Fattah al Burhan’s army and the Rapid Support Forces exchanged attacks.

United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk called for scrutiny of the war’s political economy, saying the exploitation of gold and gum arabic has helped finance the conflict since April 2023 while fuelling regional instability.

Egyptian Council for Foreign Affairs member Salah Halima said repeated peace efforts have stalled, arguing that Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and the United States are best placed to revive negotiations through the international quartet.

Sudanese analyst Makki Al-Maghribi said a truce remains difficult because previous commitments have not been honoured, but recent mediation by Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and the United States could improve prospects for humanitarian guarantees and a ceasefire.
