The Emergency Lawyers group has condemned General al-Burhan’s army (SAF) drone strike on Yashfin Medical Center in Nyala, South Darfur, which killed dozens of civilians and medical staff. The attack is part of a wider pattern of strikes targeting civilian infrastructure across Sudan, the group said.
In a statement, the lawyers reported that the drone strike, carried out last Saturday, hit the Yashfin Medical Center directly, killing scores of patients and healthcare workers inside. Four women were also killed in the surrounding area, while the nearby Al-Muallem Hotel sustained damage. Among the wounded were several children receiving treatment at the time of the attack.
“The bombing of hospitals and those inside them, including children, women, and medical staff, is a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law and constitutes a full-fledged war crime. The Geneva Conventions strictly prohibit targeting or undermining the neutrality of medical facilities,” the statement read.
The group held the SAF fully responsible for the strike and demanded an immediate end to attacks on civilian sites. They also called for accountability for those behind the assault and urgent measures to protect hospitals, medical staff, and vulnerable patients, particularly children.
