Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan has proposed Turkey as a mediator to help resolve disputes between Sudan and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), during a phone call with Sudan’s military strongman Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the Turkish presidency announced.
General al-Burhan’s army (SAF) has accused the UAE of supplying weapons and support to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) amid Sudan’s ongoing conflict.
The UAE has denied all allegations.
Burhan’s SAF has been on the losing end of the civil war in Sudan, with RSF scoring major battlefield victories on the battlefield.
In his desperation General al-Burhan has allowed the Muslim Brotherhood and Islamic Movement jihadists to join the SAF in hopes of defeating RSF.
In the call, Erdogan discussed Turkish-Sudanese relations alongside broader regional and global issues, according to the Turkish presidency’s statement.
Drawing on Turkey’s previous role mediating disputes between Somalia and Ethiopia, Erdogan suggested Ankara could help facilitate dialogue between Sudan and the UAE.
The Turkish leader reaffirmed his country’s commitment to safeguarding Sudan’s territorial integrity and sovereignty while opposing foreign interference in its affairs, the statement added.
